1/31/2011: The decisions have all been made, the bills are in front of the legislature, Frances Dyke has written a blank check out of the general tuition fund. Hiring is under way and firearms training has commenced. Now it’s time to ask the students, faculty and staff for input:

To: UO students, faculty and staff

Ninety-eight percent of all public universities our size operate their own police departments. The UO does not. Should the University of Oregon move in that direction?

In the 2011 Oregon legislative session, the Oregon University System, including the University of Oregon, is asking lawmakers to allow each campus to consider a transition from the current non-sworn public safety agency to a fully sworn police department.  If approved, the new law will allow OUS to authorize the University of Oregon to create its own police department employing state-certified and state-trained police officers, which isn’t allowable under the current law.
