University cuts computer science, expands athletics

4/23/2012: U of Florida, from Forbes via an anon correspondent, thanks. The crazy part is that, just as at UO, the university could tax athletics to support academics instead of the other way around. (UF does this, but to a very small degree.) It would just take some courage on the part of the university president.

A quote from the story: “the real villains here are the Florida state legislators, who have cut the budget for their flagship university by 30% over the past 6 years.”

So this is what having a unionized campus does for you, eh?

And you thought UO was bad? Imagine if the school was in the SEC? Having lived in Atlanta, this doesn’t surprise me at all. People at UGA would go nuts if the school cut funding for its football program. Ga Tech and Emory are schools that are far more concerned about their academics than athletic performances.

Just be glad that the Oregon legislature doesn’t give UO’s piddly little state subsidy directly to the Athletics Dept.
