Hannah Hoffman seems to misunderstand how political contributions work in labor unions and provides further misinformation on the topic.
Union members normally have the option of making *voluntary donations* to their Union's political action committee in the form of a deduction from their paycheck. Member dues, themselves, cannot be used for the purposes of political contributions...only these voluntary contributions can be used.
Hoffman seems to imply that some workers may be upset that their dues are going to political spending (and, big surprise, to Democrats). That is false. The PAC funds are voluntary donations, so if a Union member didn't like who their PAC was supporting, they always have the option of cancelling their payroll deduction and not contributing to the PAC anymore.
Thanks for commenting on a UO matter. We value comments with solid information, unverified rumors, or your considered, honest opinion - especially if that involves no more than one cuss word.
